Yalecrest, Salt Lake County

Basement finishing in Yalecrest's older houses

Yalecrest is a historic neighborhood on Salt Lake City's East Bench, also called Harvard-Yale. It is not its own city. Most of the houses date from the early twentieth century, so a basement here is rarely a new-construction shell.

The National Register of Historic Places listed the Yalecrest Historic District on November 8, 2007. The nomination describes it as roughly bounded by Sunnyside Avenue and 1300 South, and by 1300 East and 1800 East. Basements in houses of that era are often partly finished already, and the ceiling is often low. An egress window or a change to the outside of the house is a different question from drywall inside. Salt Lake City has smaller local historic districts inside the neighborhood. Ask the city about the address before anyone cuts a new opening in an exterior wall.

Salt Lake City issues the permit. Lehi's basement checklist does not cover a house here, and there is no separate Yalecrest building department. A National Register listing is not that permit.

We have not published a Yalecrest basement. The photo on this page is an in-progress kitchenette from the library, not this neighborhood. Quote-tool rates are $52, $90, and $143 per square foot. The written bid comes after a weekday visit from the Lehi shop.
